Practice of Social Transformation (ST)

About Practice of Social Transformation (ST)

The practice is geared towards inclusive growth by focusing on poverty, gender and equity dynamics into implementation and execution of programmes. The practice and its projects provide concrete directions to pro poor and gender sensitive policies and actions across many social sectors.

The Practice of Social Transformation works in following sectors

Through the practice, we focus on examining, designing, supporting and creating space for sustainable livelihood opportunities, ensuring equity and empowerment of community and citizens, improving governance, building skills, improving environmental and social security in a region marked by unevenly distributed, accessed and severely contested resources.

For example, our state-level situation analyses have mapped land and water resource endowments, distribution, access and use patterns for the ultra-poor. We have also strategically and scientifically examined and documented the policies, institutional arrangements, practices and social equations that impact communities directly, due to unequal and unplanned distribution of resource allocations. One of our noteworthy initiatives has been on “Cross Border Labour Mobility, Remittances and Economic Development in South Asia.” This ambitious study funded by the World Bank covered India, Nepal and Bangladesh and focused on benchmarking cross-border labour mobility and remittances, and their implication for economic development in South Asia. TARU also led the consortium for managing five-year DFID-supported International NGO Partnerships Programme (IPAP). The Programme Management involved significant effort towards capacity building of NGOs and NGO networks across India, besides adding to the public debate on issues around social exclusion.

Our contextualized solutions, research and perspectives have also been informing on issues and progress of Millennium Development Goals and now on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and governmental and global development commitments.
